Afternoon Topic

Monday - RE and Music

RE – The Parable of the Two Builders (Matthew 7:24-27).

'What would Jesus do?' and 'Inspirational Leaders' is our RE topic for this half term. Today, watch the video about the Parable of the Two Builders (Matthew 7:24-27) which teaches that Christians should build their lives on the words of Jesus (video link in resource sheet below). Have a think about the kinds of things that guide people in deciding how to live. What things help shape your life?

Music – Listen and Appraise Step 1 – You’ve Got A Friend (In Me)

Youtube link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DNZUKm0ApEM

Play the song and find and move to the pulse. Answer these questions in your learning handbook after you have finished listening (in complete sentences).

  • When was this song written and by whom?
  • Who is it being performed by? Has it been performed by anyone else?
  • Was it written for a purpose?
  • How does the song make you feel?
  • Does the song tell a story?
  • What does the song make you think of?
  • How old do you think this piece of music is?
  • Did the tempo stay the same all the way through the song?
  • In music, dynamics means how loud or quiet music is. What are the dynamics in this song?
  • Can you identify the different instruments and voices that you heard?
  • Did all the instruments and voices play throughout the whole song?
  • What is the style of this music?
  • What are your opinions about the song?

Tuesday - Science

Science – Classification of vertebrates

  1. Scientists classify living organisms according to their characteristics. Vertebrates are an example of a classification group. To start your Science lesson today, there is a prior learning vertebrate activity in the resource folder below. What can you remember about vertebrates? Have a go and this and check.

  1. Read the information below:

• Carl Linnaeus (1707–1778) was a Swedish botanist, physician and zoologist. He laid the foundations for traditional classification and binomial naming systems.
• There are a number of ranks, or levels, within the biological classification system. The first rank is called a kingdom, the second a phylum, then class, order, family, genus and species.
• For example, humans are classified as follows: Kingdom – animal; Phylum – vertebrate; Class – mammal; Order – primate; Family – hominid; Genus – homo; Species – sapiens.
• We typically use the genus and species when naming a living thing – this is the binomial naming system. For example, Homo (genus) and sapiens (species).
• Advances in DNA technology are changing traditional classification. As we sequence the DNA of more and more living things, many of them get reclassified according to similarities in their DNA and not their physical features.
• Classification keys help us identify individual organisms based on their physical characteristics. Keys are typically branched, dichotomous or tabular, and use paired statements, such as ‘has four legs’ or ‘does not have four legs’.
• There are many different types of classification available online that can be downloaded and printed.

For the second part of your Science lesson today, choose a favourite animal or plant then research its binomial name and how it is classified according to the ranking system Linnaeus developed: kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus and species. Key questions to consider - does your animal or plant have all the ranks or does it have different ranks? In your books, we want to see an example like the one below:

Human

Binomial name - Homo sapiens (‘wise man’ in Latin)

Kingdom – animal;

Phylum – vertebrate;

Class – mammal;

Order – primate;

Family – hominid;

Genus – homo;

Species – sapiens.

Wednesday - Geography and Spanish

Geography - Explore the world

Please open the resource for today's lesson (link below)

Spanish - Desayuno En El Cafe (At the Café) – Making a meal out of it!

For Spanish this afternoon, log in to Language Angels using your personal log-in that has been emailed home to you (emailed to your parents by Mrs Smith on Friday 08.01.2021). Once on there, you will see the Desayuno En El Café games area. For this week, as an introduction to the topic, we would like to you begin to familiarise yourself with the spelling and pronunciation of the terms by playing the Picture Memory game. When you have played the game a few times and are familiar with the terms, select some of your favourite foods that are featured and draw your perfect meal in your learning from home book. Under each food item, write both the Spanish and English translation. Don’t forget to write the date, title (Making a meal out of it!) and present your work in a ‘Take Care’ way.

Thursday - Art and Design

Art and Design – Creating a 3D Picture of a Cold Habitat

Using the information that you collected this morning when researching an animal which lives in a cold habitat, this afternoon you will create a 3D picture of the habitat where your animal might live. You will find a video tutorial from Mrs Marston about how you could do this in the resources section.

Friday - One Decision, Picture News and Advice-a-tron

One Decision - Staying / Keeping Healthy

This is our new topic for this half term. Begin the topic by completing the evaluation on the resources section below.

Picture News

Should anyone be allowed pets? Have a look at the activity in the supporting resources for the explanation of your task today. The link for the optional video is - RSPCA speaking about their experience    https://bit.ly/3ghBXJM

Advice-a-tron

You will find instructions for this fun Friday activity within the resource in the link below.
