Home Learning Week 2 (11.01.2021)

Learning from home - week beginning Monday 11th January 2021.

This week we are kick-starting our new UKS2 topic, Frozen Kingdoms! This topic will run until half term.

In the Frozen Kingdoms project, we will...

  • learn about the regions of the Arctic and Antarctic, particularly the similarities and differences between these two regions, including the climate, landscape and natural resources.
  • find out how to use grid references, lines of latitude and longitude, contour lines and symbols to identify the geographical locations of the Arctic and Antarctic, and how these, along with the tilt of the Earth, affect day length and warmth.
  • investigate polar oceans to learn how they differ from other oceans on Earth and how climate change increases Earth's temperature and leads to rising sea levels.
  • discover the indigenous people of the Arctic, learning how their lives have changed over time, and about the positives and negatives of tourism in Antarctica.
  • find out how to classify animals, animal adaptations and evolution, and polar exploration and discovery.

To accompany our Frozen Kingdoms topic, as part of our English this term we will also read The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. We would ordinarily read this to you in class, however if you would like to read your own copy you can, or you could listen to an audiobook version online to help you with your English (link below, which was also emailed out to parents in advance on 06.01.2021).

Links to a dramatised free version of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe audiobook (split into 2 parts) is linked below:

Home Learning Information:

This week, as well as written information about your learning tasks, we will also send by email a link to your parents of a video we would like you to watch, before you start your day. This will feature one of the teachers from our UKS2 team (sometimes it maybe two of us or sometimes maybe all of us – it will depend on which adults are in school with the key worker bubble). The purpose of this is so that you can start your day with us, as you normally would at school, and so that we can talk you through your learning for the day, as well as you having your written information about your task in front of you. With regards to home learning moving forward, from next week (18.01.2021) it is hoped that the children will all be able to access the home learning via Microsoft Teams. More details about this will follow as the week progresses.

Please bear in mind, teachers are now on a rota, so you may not always be able to readily contact your child’s individual teacher as they may be with key worker children in school. This might mean that you receive a reply from a different member of the UKS2 team staff (UKS2 team staff are Mrs Marston, Mr Jennings, Miss Brownley and Mrs Smith). Should you wish to email a different member of staff who is not in school about an issue, we will get back to you as we will be working from home. For your information, our in school rota for this week is as follows:
